The Need For Sensible AI Regulation
Artificial intelligence holds great promise for our world, but it also has the potential to be misused in catastrophic ways. Even Silicon Valley acknowledges the necessity of regulating this new technology.
Unfortunately, State Senator Scott Wiener, who rarely misses an opportunity to over-regulate something good or under-regulate something terrible, has entered the AI debate with a bill called SB1047. While intended to prevent AI from getting out of control, many believe it would stifle innovation and drive companies from California instead.
Former Google Brain founder Andrew Ng has stated that there are sensible proposals for AI regulations, but unfortunately, SB1047 is not one of them. Venture capital firm a16z has warned that the bill would stifle open-source AI development and have a downstream chilling effect on AI investment and expansion and the small business entrepreneurship that makes California what it is today. Similarly, Arun Rao, lead product manager for generative AI at Meta, has called the bill unworkable and predicted it would end open source in California.
True to form, Wiener has responded with a barrage of emotional rhetoric, calling the complaints about his bill inflammatory, toxic, and disinformation. How much more of this can our state take? The migration of large companies from California has picked up speed, particularly with the passage of AB1955, which prevents public schools from disclosing a child’s gender confusion to their parents. Squashing a burgeoning new industry will only exacerbate the problem.
We need sensible regulation, not Scott Wiener’s extreme agenda, which treats the state as an experimental playground for radical ideas that end up encouraging issues like drug abuse, sex trafficking, and retail theft. I am a San Francisco nurse and mother, building a diverse grassroots movement of parents, police, and concerned citizens to unseat Wiener at the ballot box this November.
We can do better, whether sensibly regulating AI or respecting parents’ rights. Please consider donating or volunteering to my campaign to help me in this endeavor. Together, we can Save Our State.
